How a Google Home Device Accidentally Stopped a Domestic Dispute

Smart home device calls the police during domestic dispute

Amazon's Alexa Voice System is being credited with saving the woman's life.

It was first reported that the device was a Google Home device, but this was later changed.

It's unclear what sort of smart home device was found in the house.

It's not clear yet what kind of smart speaker device called 911 and how it did so, considering Google Home now can't make voice calls. According to the New York Post, a woman was rescued by police when her 28-year-old boyfriend, Eduardo Barros, allegedly started to beat her and waved around a gun.

Barros reportedly had a firearm and threatened to kill his girlfriend. It's a clear reminder that smart home devices are always listening. Google Home apparently heard "call the sheriffs", and proceeded to call the sheriffs.

Earlier reports said that the smart speaker involved in this story was a Google Home unit, but later versions removed any reference to a specific model.

Deputies arrived on the scene and were able to extricate the woman and her daughter from the home, ABC News reported.

Barros faces charges of false imprisonment, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on a household member, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a household member and being a felon in possession of a firearm, police said.

According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff Department in Tijeras, New Mexico, "This fantastic technology definitely helped save a mother and her child from a very violent situation". "This fantastic technology definitely helped save a mother and her child from a very violent situation", Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III told ABC News. The device is now unidentified at the time of writing this news report. In a recent case, Amazon released data recorded by its Echo device related to a murder case. A police dog was eventually used to take him down.

Many people already enjoy the hands-free convenience of giving voice commands to smart assistants. The woman seemed unaware that a 911 call was already made and the feature is not yet available on Amazon Echo devices. For example, Amazon's new Echo Show, which comes with a touchscreen and camera, allows an Echo Show user to "drop in" on another.

Police officers responded to a call placed to dispatchers where they could hear the shouting and arguments that were taking place inside the house from which the call was placed.
