California wildfires prompt thousands to evacuate, state of emergency

Smoke billows up from the Alamo Fire which jumped retardant lines and swelled to 300 acres east of Santa Maria

Evacuations are still in effect and San Marcos Pass Road, Highway 154, is closed.

Eric Peterson, Santa Barbara County fire chief, said the campers could not be taken out right away. It has burned about 300 acres.

Saturday's goals for firefighters are to continue air tanker and helicopter water drops and provide structure protection for all the properties that have been evacuated. "They have quite a few fires there and seem pretty busy, so they need help from other provinces", he said.

The so-called Alamo Fire, feeding on bone-dry vegetation, almost tripled in size on Saturday to about 19,000 acres (7,700 hectares) on the border between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Cal Fire said 5,400 structures were threatened.

The Alamo fire now spans over 23,000 acres with only 10% of it contained.

Earl Warren Showgrounds, 3400 Calle Real in Santa Barbara, was hosting the National Multibreed Horse Show from Thursday through Saturday, so it had very little space available to shelter evacuated animals when the Whittier Fire broke out Saturday afternoon.

Fire crews have yet to contain the fire.

Forty-five fires are burning across the Western part of the US, according to the US Forest Service.

Parkfield fire: The blaze in Monterey County has charred 1,816 west of Parkfield. It is 90 percent contained.

Hundreds of people were ordered to evacuate from a fast-moving wildfire burning through steep terrain near California's central coast on Saturday, after searing temperatures and parched land fueled dozens of blazes in the U.S. West and Southwest. Its cause is under investigation.

In recent days, temperatures have been topping the 100-degree mark in much of the West - including in OR, where a fire at Summer Lake quickly grew to cover 950 acres on Saturday. The Wall Fire started just before 3 p.m. Friday at Chinese Wall Road, about 5 miles north of Bangor, according to Cal Fire officials.
