Porte crashes out of Tour de France

Geraint Thomas is out of the Tour de France after crashing during stage nine from Nantua to Chambery on Sunday.

However, Porte's BMC sporting director Fabio Baldato insisted the team had come prepared, particularly for the Mont du Chat climb and descent.

The BMC Racing rider hit the rocks on his right-hand side and was attended to by medics, who carried him into an ambulance on a stretcher.

The Col de la Biche was the first of three hors categorie climbs to be tackled on a brutal day of racing through the Jura mountains. Froome soon returned to the favourites before forcing a selection with Porte as the pair exchanged a volley of accelerations.

He crashed twice while wearing the yellow jersey, on stages two and four, and on Saturday went straight into a hay bale after he and Froome took a corner too fast on a descent during stage eight to Station des Rousses.

Bardet looked destined to pick up a stage win at the home of his Ag2R-La Mondiale team's headquarters, but it was not to be.

It was a joyous and confusing end to a dramatic, calamitous, insane and at times perilous stage - one that will long be remembered in cycling folklore, for both the right and wrong reasons.

Getting through Sunday's Stage 9 unscathed, arguably the toughest of this Tour's 21 stages, marked a crucial step in the three-time champion's campaign for a fourth win.

It meant it was a bitter-sweet day for Froome who, despite increasing his lead and seeing several top rivals lose time, lost his chief Team Sky lieutenant Thomas and good friend Porte.

Porte had been having an exceptional day on the bike, riding in the yellow jersey group chasing the last remaining breakaway rider, Warren Barguil (Sunweb), when he appeared to misjudge a bend.

Although the group went with Aru, they neutralised the Astana rider, and allowed Froome to get back into the group.
