Florida police say Venus Williams was driving 'lawfully' before fatal crash

After a win on the opening day of Wimbledon Venus Williams broke into tears win asked about her June 9 car accident that resulted in a passenger death

The police said a auto entered the intersection in front of Williams and made a left turn, causing her to stop advancing through the intersection to avoid a collision.

Her auto smashed head-on into the front-right of Williams' vehicle, the officer said.

Mr Barson was hospitalized and died two weeks later, on June 22, due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Around the same time, Barson's light had just turned green and Barson's vehicle entered the intersection, where it collided with Williams' vehicle.

Friday afternoon, attorneys for both Williams and the Barson family were in court to determine how best to handle and preserve the evidence contained within the cars. But in light of the footage the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department released a statement exonerating Williams.

However, fresh evidence cleared Williams, although the investigation is ongoing.

Barson's family is now suing Williams for Jeremy Barson's death. Williams told police the light was green when she pulled her 2010 Toyota Sequoia out of the Steeplechase community and started crossing Northlake to go to BallenIsles, where she has a home.

Authorities had initially ruled Williams "at fault" in the June incident, which led to the death of a 78-year-old man in the other auto and spawned a lawsuit by his family against the tennis star.

The video provided by the police shows that Ms. Barson's vehicle slammed into the passenger side of Williams's S.U.V.as the S.U.V. appeared to be leaving the intersection.

"The video released by the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department (PBGPD) continues to support the fact that Ms Williams remained in the intersection at a red light, violating the Barsons' right of way", Steinger said.

At that moment a auto containing driver Linda Barson, 67, and her husband, Jerome J Barson, 78, slammed into the front of her SUV.

On Friday, a judge granted an emergency motion that will allow Williams' SUV to be searched in connection with the crash.

In a statement posted on Facebook Sunday, Williams said, "I am devastated and heartbroken by this accident".

"She remains deeply saddened by the loss suffered by the Barson family and continues to keep them in her thoughts and prayers".

Williams broke down in tears last week following a Wimbledon press conference.

Venus Williams won't attend the hearing stemming from the fatal accident she was involved in.
