Teen jailed for London bomb plot

Teenager who planned to bomb Elton John concert in London is jailed for life

Potential targets in the United Kingdom's capital he'd identified included Queen Elizabeth II's London residence, Buckingham Palace, the busy shopping district of Oxford Street and an Elton John concert in Hyde Park that was held on September 11 a year ago - the 15th anniversary of the US terror attacks.

The pair are believed to be the first brothers to be jailed for life for separate Islamist terrorist plots in Britain.

Mark Summers QC, mitigating, said it was a "crude, ill-thought-out" plan made at the behest of others. The court earlier heard that Syed had become influenced by members of Al-Muhajiroun (ALM), a banned group linked to radical preacher Anjem Choudary.

Authorities subsequently seized Syed's passport in 2015 because of fears that he would travel to Syria to join the jihadi group.

Syed now publicly rejects his past beliefs and condemned the recent bomb attack at the Ariana Grande pop concert in Manchester, the lawyer added.

At the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales in London on Monday (3Jul17) Syed was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 16 years and six months, having previously admitted the preparation of terrorist acts.

Judge Topolski said: "Overall you were, and you remained intent upon and committed to, carrying out an act of mass murder in this country".

Syed told him he wanted to "do martyrdom" after causing "damage".

The BBC reported that Syed comes from a family of extremists.

Syed unknowingly spoke to a police officer online and in person seeking assistance in sourcing weapons.

Syed had researched how to make the bomb with a remote timer after looking up instructions online, which had been published by Jihadis. Syed handed the agent around $200 for a suicide bomb that he would pick up the next week after the August 30 meeting. If I go to prison, I go to prison. "If I die, I die, you understand", he said.

Syed was arrested in September a year ago, when his electronic equipment was seized. Asked for the password to unlock the device, Syed said: "Yeah I.S.I.S - you like that?" His brother Nadir Syed was jailed past year for planning to behead a member of the public in the street on Remembrance Sunday.
