Syria: 18 killed as vehicle bombers strike capital city Damascus

Multiple blasts, mortar rounds hit Damascus

The post Damascus bombing kills at least 21 people appeared first on PBS NewsHour.

Two other explosions could have occurred in the Syrian capital, however, the security services managed to foil the plot and intercept explosive-laden cars.

The third auto, however, was able to make it into the city center close to Tahrir Square where the bomb went off.

Reports say the casualties in Sunday's attack occurred when one of the bombers set off his device after being encircled near the Old City district of Bab Touma.

State television reported that there were a number of people killed and wounded in the blast.

Syrian State TV showed burnt out cars and buses and damaged buildings along the road.

It says a suicide auto bomber struck near Tahreer Square in central Damascus early Sunday, and that two other bombs went off after security forces chased other attackers.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The identity of the jets that carried out the air strike was not known, the Observatory, a Britain-based war monitor, said.

Pro-government forces have engaged in heavy fighting in Damascus' suburbs during the war, but have largely kept the rebels out of the city center.

Damascus has remained under the control of President Bashar al-Assad and avoided much of the fighting, but it has experienced a number of suicide bomb attacks.
