Etihad allows electronic devices onboard United States flights from Abu Dhabi

Airways Boeing 777-3FX company aircraft takes off at the Charles de Gaulle airport in Roissy France

Officials said the laptop restrictions were removed for Etihad after inspections by the Transportation Security Administration verified that Department of Homeland Security measures announced last week had been implemented correctly at the airline.

Etihad Airways has been exempted from a US ban on laptops and other electronics for flights from Abu Dhabi International Airport, officials said Sunday, the change to a three-month-old Trump administration policy affecting flights to the United States from eight Muslim-majority countries.

U.S. officials are pushing overseas airports to beef up security on laptops and similar items after intelligence reports warned that terrorist groups may be capable of hiding bombs in such machines.

Etihad said its passengers flying to the United States from Abu Dhabi International Airport "clear US Immigration and Customs at the US Preclearance facility in Terminal 3".

Abu Dhabi International Airport will not be subject to a ban on carrying laptops in the cabins of planes to the USA, it has emerge. He said American monitors would make further visits to ensure the checks were being done properly.

'We commend Etihad for working swiftly to implement these additional measures. "Their efforts are a model for both foreign and domestic airlines looking to adopt the new measures". Neither Abu Dhabi International Airport nor Homeland Security immediately responded to a request for comment.

TheU.S. does not have jurisdictions over foreign airports, but has authority over airlines that have direct USA bound flights.

In late May, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said he was considering banning laptops from the passenger cabins of all global flights to and from the U.S. Kelly's comments came after President Trump shared highly classified intelligence about the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) wanting to use laptops to target aircraft with senior Russian officials visiting the White House.

The US ban, first announced in March, now applies to nonstop US-bound flights from nine global airports in Amman, Kuwait, Cairo, Istanbul, Jeddah, Riyadh, Casablanca, Doha and Dubai.

Kelly's comments came after Donald Trump shared highly classified intelligence with senior Russian officials visiting the White House. The three Gulf carriers - Emirates, Etihad and Qatar - flew over a crore passengers in and out of India previous year with anywhere from 67% to 80% of these flyers taking connecting flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha to fly between India and rest of the world.

Dubai International Airport, home of Emirates, is the world's busiest international air travel hub.

The Gulf carriers all vigorously deny that.
