Ships collide in Dover Straits: Seafrontier and Huayang Endeavour hit each other as coastguard and lifeboats called out

PARIS — An oil tanker and a large cargo ship collided Saturday in the Dover Strait between Britain and France but the accident caused no casualties or pollution and both vessels were able to set off again, French authorities said.

The Hong Kong-registered 600ft tanker, the Seafrontier, was carrying 37,953 metric tonnes of petrol and had 27 people on board.

A UK Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter was also scrambled to assess the damage to the vessels, the 183-metre-long crude oil tanker, the Seafrontier and the Huayang Endeavour, a 75,000-tonne bulk carrier.

"There are no injuries to report on either vessel".

At the time of the collision the two vessels were located in British waters, about 18 nautical miles from the northern French coastal town of Dunkirk near the border with Belgium.

None of the 49 crew from both ships - registered from Hong Kong with Indian and Chinese crews - were injured and all hands were accounted for.

The prefecture said the situation was now under control and "doesn't pose a risk of pollution or a danger to navigation" in the strait.

It is understood both vessels suffered damage in the collision with the Seafrontier having a hole above the water line and damage to the superstructure.

The tanker, Seafrontier, was en route Puerto Barrios in Guatemala while the carrier, Huayang Endeavour, was travelling to Lagos in Nigeria.

But British authorities in Dover have sent two patrol boats and two helicopters to the area. A tug was also called to the scene from Boulogne, France.
