Murray withdraws from Wimbledon warm-up

The three-time grand slam champion has only played two competitive sets on grass in the lead-up to Wimbledon after his shock first-round exit at Queen's last week.

The Murray camp, though, have downplayed the severity of the latest setback, insisting it is no more than "slight soreness in the hip" and his withdrawal today from a non-ranking match is only precautionary.

Murray's coach, Ivan Lendl, brushed off concerns that the Scot might not be fit, responding with a "not at all" when asked if he was anxious about the physical state of the champion.

Murray has had anything but a smooth run up until now on grass, having crashed out of Queen's in the very first round. "If the weather is good I am sure we will practice". "We have seen that movie over and over".

Murray rarely takes on anything more than practice in the week before Wimbledon but was said to be desperate to find some form. This is a season in which injury and illness have caused much frustration. "I'd be happy to say if it was because it would also give me an excuse for why I maybe haven't played my best this year". Here are some of her best pictures.

Federer, now favourite with Murray only third in the betting, warned: "Andy needs to feel he could play for 14 days, or seven matches".

That was a significant interruption to his preparation for Wimbledon but he said it would give him more quality training time with his coach, Ivan Lendl, who chose to stay on in Europe after the French Open rather than return briefly to Florida. You need to feel confident in your body, otherwise what's the point?

The world No 1 and defending champion will be in the opening match on centre court when the competition gets underway next Monday, and he has admitted that the yearly demands on him at his home tournament can be "stressful".
