Trump's ObamaCare pivot, repeal first? What you need to know

Lankford To Request Cancellation Of August Recess

Senate GOP leaders still want to come up with some kind of intra-party agreement by this afternoon, submit to the Congressional Budget Office, and then hold a vote in two weeks, but by voicing support for an approach he's previously rejected, Trump just made the process more hard. This morning, Trump proposed an entirely new tack: Instead of repealing Obamacare and replacing it with an alternative, let the Senate just repeal it.

This was the official Republican approach, right up until Donald Trump condemned it, repeatedly, insisting that policymakers should repeal and replace "Obamacare" at the same time.

The senator has been a very vocal opponent of the president over the past year, but said that congressional Republicans need to work on repealing the Affordable Care Act first, then work towards a replacement.

Even before Trump was inaugurated in January, Republicans had debated and ultimately discarded the idea of repealing Obamacare before replacing it, concluding that both must happen simultaneously.

There's no reason to assume the president saw Sasse's letter. Senator John Thune (R-SD) confirmed to Fox News on Wednesday that Republicans were aiming to amend the bill by Friday and send the fresh draft to the CBO for scoring over the July 4 recess. The GOP now runs the House, the Senate, and the White House.

Senator Paul revealed in a tweet on Friday that he has spoken to both President Trump and Senate leadership about splitting the bill in two, and suggested that Republicans should keep their word to repeal and replace Obamacare.

"We must keep our word". Since not enough progress has been made on healthcare, during an appearance on Fox & Friends this morning the Republican Senator recommended that repeal be handled first and then "have the President ask us to cancel our August state work period and stay here [to] then work on replace separate". However, McCaughey said it's the Affordable Care Act's mandated expansion that has actually restricted health care access among this demographic.

The GOP had been trying since January to execute a simultaneous repeal-and-replace plan, particularly because many Republican lawmakers - Kentucky Sen.

Trump's tweet came soon after Sasse's appearance, and the senator responded with a tweet of his own, saying: "Glad you agree, Mr Pres".
