'Baby' Driver' Crew Reveals What It is Like to Film in Atlanta

Music, car chases highlight heist thriller

Overall: Baby Driver is the sure to please fans of Edgar Wright's past work behind the camera, and masterfully moves the acclaimed filmmaker outside the territory previously explored in his much beloved Cornetto Trilogy. A rollicking action/adventure/comedy/romance/musical that finds a dynamite angle and sticks with it.

Baby Driver is off to the races with the film playing in theaters right now.

Revving the Engine: As the film's central protagonist and eponymous star, Ansel Elgort serves as the driver of the feel good hit of the summer.

The rush to anoint Baby Driver as The Next Cool Thing ™ is as confusing as it is wrong. Nearly exactly 30 years after Dirty Dancing, finally another movie has a protagonist named "Baby". The supporting cast features a few notable awards favorites, including two-time Oscar victor Kevin Spacey as a crime boss, as well as Oscar champ Jamie Foxx and Emmy victor Jon Hamm. There's so much here that works: the dialogue is witty and amusing. Adding in the awesome soundtrack I mentioned earlier, you get some wonderful action set pieces.

It's got skillfully blocked chase scenes that look nothing like what the Fast and Furious movies do.

What follows is a fast-paced, humour-infused, musically-masterful heist movie featuring expertly choreographed vehicle chases and manoeuvres timed perfectly to the tunes on Baby's wide variety of iPods. It probably helps that it's not trying to present itself as another location. Even though the film has an all-star cast that gives great performances, the real star is director Edgar Wright.

Wright layers Baby Driver with the same dose of teenage eccentricity and quirkiness as he did with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), but this time cloaks his British sensibilities with everything Hollywood, including classic American diners, cars and humour. In the masterpieces Shaun of the Dead and The World's End, Wright blends humiliation comedy with the choreographed mayhem, finding humanity in between; when the characters start fighting zombies to the accompaniment of Queen songs, you roar with approval not just for the filmmaking but for the triumph of little people finding their rhythm. Released on June 28th, and making donuts in the driveway is crime thriller "Baby Driver". I like him better well-groomed, but his acting was spot-on.

Part of what contributes to this is that not every relationship in the film really lands. And the film's endgame has just one or two more beats than it needs to have.

Baby Driver undoubtedly knows how to have fun and be original, especially among today's sequel-heavy and deeply unoriginal movie climate, but despite a plot about a getaway driver running jobs to an impeccable soundtrack, the story and plotting feels surprisingly lingering and low energy.
