Congressional Baseball Game to be held 1 day after shootings

Gunman opens fire in GOP softball practice in Alexandria, Va.

Barth has been treated and released from the hospital; Mika, who was shot in the chest and arms, remains in critical condition at George Washington University Hospital.

The attack happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park where lawmakers were practicing for a congressional charity baseball game.

The Republicans were on the field practicing the day before the charity game when James T. Hodgkinson opened fire and struck several members of Congress.

Ticket sales for the annual Congressional Baseball Game were motivated by tragedy and inspired by unity. Many on the Republican side were fresh from the horror of the ballfield shooting rampage a day earlier.

Republican team manager Joe Barton congratulated their Democratic counterparts as he received the trophy from Democrat manager Mike Doyle.

The Democrats won the game, 11-2.

"The congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.

The shooter, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL, was shot and killed by Capitol Police officers who were in Scalise's security detail.

Special agent David Bailey, who was hit in the ankle as he charged the suspect, threw the ceremonial first pitch. "Trump said by playing the game "you are demonstrating to the world that we will not be intimidated" by threats, or acts of violence".

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and at least three others were shot Wednesday morning during a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., police and witnesses said.

Trump says, "Steve is our friend, he's a patriot and he's a true fighter". We pray for all of the victims of this bad crime who are still recovering, including Zachary Barth and Matt Mika, both of whom are respected and cherished by so many. "Ladies and gentlemen, let's play ball".

Historically the game brings an intense political rivalry onto the baseball field and this year will be no different.

Scalise was shot in the hip, with the bullet tearing through his pelvis and injuring internal organs.

Congress members from both sides have called for the baseball game to go on today. The suspect, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, from IL, used a M4 assault carbine during the attack, CBS News also confirmed. Brooks said security officers fired back at the shooter.

She also says she didn't want to discuss her husband's politics. The man calmly asked which party's lawmakers were practicing and Duncan told him they were the Republicans.

Scalise's trauma surgeon said Friday he can hope to make an "excellent recovery", even though the lawmaker arrived at the hospital Wednesday at imminent risk of death. He said some 15 officers attended a May town-hall meeting where many in the angry crowd blamed him for helping to revive the GOP's health care bill.
