Congressional Baseball Game breaks records for fundraising, ticket sales

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La. speaks with the media on Capitol Hill in Washington. Scalise wounded when a gunman opened fire at a Republican baseball practice delivered a Father's Day message Sunday June

The American Hospital Association defines "critical" condition as: "Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits".

The condition of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise has been upgraded to fair, a week after he was shot while participating in a practice with members of the Republican congressional baseball team.

"Congressman Steve Scalise continues to make good progress", MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement.

Federal Bureau of Investigation officials said Scalise acted alone and had checked if it were Republicans or Democrats practicing at the field in Alexandria, Virginia prior to shooting. Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip early on Wednesday at a baseball field in a suburb of Washington.

"The game took on a more profound meaning after Wednesday's shooting as Americans from all backgrounds stood united in the name of charity", the press release read.

The attack spurred an outpouring of bipartisan support, and Scalise's colleagues on Capitol Hill continue to rally together.

Deputy Whip Patrick McHenry, R-North Carolina, is holding a blood drive for Scalise at the Capitol. His family said in a statement Saturday that Mika had undergone another operation and was expected to recover fully, according to NBC News.

Dr. Jack Sava, who treated Scalise at the hospital, said Friday that the representative arrived at the hospital "with an imminent risk of death".
