Oscar legend Daniel Day-Lewis retiring from acting

Daniel Day-Lewis Retiring From Acting

Day-Lewis is the only one to win three Oscars for Best Actor for "My Left Foot', 'Lincoln" and 'There Will Be Blood'. "He is immensely grateful to all his collaborators and audiences over the many years".

Although he is known to be a very private individual, and has made it clear that he does not intend to make any further comment about the end of an outstanding career, his many fans will nonetheless wish him a long and happy retirement.

Variety was the first to report on the actor's retirement on Tuesday.

Method acting can be a risky proposition, some actors lose their sense of self, but Day-Lewis' performances are a testament to the craft.

Widely considered to be perhaps the greatest actor in recent film history, Day-Lewis has played some of the most iconic roles of the past decades.

The British and Irish citizen "will no longer be working as an actor".

This December will mark Daniel Day-Lewis' final appearance in a film when Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread hits theaters.

He also earned Oscar nods for Gangs Of New York and In The Name Of The Father.

During one such period in the late 1990s, while learning to be a cobbler in Florence, Italy, he was reportedly lured back to the USA by producer Harvey Weinstein, director Martin Scorcese and actor Leonardo DiCaprio to take on the lead role in Gangs Of New York. During his career, the actor was also won two Golden Globe Best Actor trophies and four BAFTA Film Awards. He took a five-year hiatus in 1997 after filming Jim Sheridan's The Boxer, after which he acted in Gangs of NY. After his 2013 Oscar win for "Lincoln", London's Sunday Times reported that he planned to take a sabbatical at his farm in Ireland. From Gangs of NY to The Crucible, Day-Lewis proved his abilities a long time ago cemented his place as one of the best actors in the world.

The actor, always known for being tremendously fastidious about the roles he was willing to accept, is married to filmmaker Rebecca Miller, with whom he has three children.
