May offers 5-mn-pound support package for London fire victims

"Whilst it will look at the how, perhaps more importantly, it will also look at why this happened", Cundy said.

"But, frankly, the support on the ground for families who needed help or basic information in the initial hours after this appalling disaster was not good enough".

A memorial service for the victims of a fire that ravaged through a residential tower block in London was held on Saturday (June 17) at the Saint Pius X Catholic Church near the affected Grenfell Tower.

Commander Cundy said in a statement: "It is really important that we are clear about the scale of the challenge facing us as our teams search Grenfell Tower to recover those people still inside and return them to their loved ones". The presumed dead includes 30 people authorities previously confirmed perished in the Wednesday morning blaze at the public housing complex.

As NPR's Merrit Kennedy reported, the Grenfell Tower fire has aroused the ire of those who feel it was caused by corporate malfeasance and who feel Prime Minister Theresa May's government is not doing enough to respond.

Earlier, dozens of people stormed the town hall building in the London's Kensington district where the tragedy was being discussed.

Despite that outcome, fire experts say "stay put" is still the best advice - as long as the building has proper fire-suppression protections, such as multiple stairwells, sprinkler systems, fireproof doors and flame-resistant construction materials, some of which were lacking in the London blaze.

She also pledged 5 million pounds ($6.39 million) of support, housing guarantees and help with access to bank accounts and cash. Those who lost their homes will be rehoused within three weeks, she said.

While he refused to speculate on the inquiry's outcome, Cundy said, "I would like to reassure everybody that we will be looking at all criminal offenses that may have been committed by any individual or organization".

It said: "We are devastated by this tragedy. I absolutely get why they're angry", Green said.

There is simmering anger in the multi-ethnic north Kensington area hit by the blaze, and public fury has been directed at senior government figures, including May, who was jeered Friday after she visited. She said an inquest would avoid a "whitewash".

Another demonstration took place outside May's Downing Street office, while hundreds of mourners later gathered near the tower for a candlelight vigil.

One banner showed a drawing of May with the words "Shame" and "Disgrace".

Queen Elizabeth II marked her official birthday Saturday by saying Britain remains "resolute in the face of adversity" after the horrendous fire and recent extremist attacks in London and Manchester. They also expressed anger that the prime minister did not meet with survivors or victims of the fire when she initially visited the neighborhood following the tragedy. The queen said it was "difficult to escape a very somber mood" on what is normally a day of celebration. "The country has witnessed a succession of bad tragedies". "United in our sadness, we are equally determined, without fear or favor, to support all those rebuilding lives so horribly affected by injury and loss".

Such a direct message from the monarch is rare and indicates the extent of the turmoil in Britain.

More than a week after the election result, talks are still ongoing with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) for a confidence-and-supply deal.

"Wallowing in the wash of a general election that stripped our prime minister of her authority on the very eve of European Union negotiations, neither common sense nor the evidence suggest she can re-establish public confidence", Parris wrote in the Times.
