Australian imams condemn London attack

A man, who had earlier suffered a heart attack, died at the scene but it was not clear if his death was connected to the van attack.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick added: "We are here as you are well aware because of the awful, bad attack that took place last night".

- UK Prime Minister Theresa May said police are treating the van incident near Finsbury Park "as a potential terrorist attack", the UK Press Association reported. She hailed the "bravery" of locals for detaining the driver at the scene in the north London district of Finsbury Park.

"Today we come together as we have done before to condemn this act and state again that hatred and evil of this kind will never succeed", the Prime Minister continued. Mr Corbyn, who was pictured earlier looking visibly upset as he visited the scene, is understood to have attended Muslim Welfare House for its afternoon prayers.

Abdulrahman Saleh Alamoudi, who witnessed the attack, suggested the attacker could have been heading for the nearby Finsbury Park mosque, but the driver changed course after seeing the crowd.

The driver of the van jumped out of the vehicle and tried to run, Aidroos said. "We stopped him until the police came".

Osborne has been arrested on suspicion of terror offenses in the collision with pedestrians outside the Muslim Welfare House, Metropolitan Police said. So they managed to get hold of him and didn't want anyone hurting this person as well as people were quite frustrated.

Police said that there were "a number of casualties" and that one person was arrested after a van struck a crowd of pedestrians in London.

"I was in bed and I heard this massive bang right outside", Ruweyda said. "It was a premeditated attack".

But he insisted: "This community of ours in Finsbury Park is mild-mannered, calm ... not known for violence".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan urged people to remain calm and vigilant, according to The Independent. It's no different to Westminster, or Manchester, or London Bridge. The attacker was shot dead by police.

The man who died was was already receiving first aid at the time of the attack, the latest in a spate of terrorist strikes in Britain.

"All the victims were from the Muslim community and we will be deploying extra police patrols to reassure the public, especially those observing Ramadan".

"Today's attack falls at a hard time in the life of this city, following on from the attack on London Bridge two weeks ago - and of course the unimaginable tragedy of Grenfell Tower last week", May said. In a statement Khan said, "While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the awful attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect".

Over the weekend, the Muslim Welfare House hosted an event in memory of Jo Cox, a lawmaker who was murdered a year ago by a right-wing extremist.

"We hear about radicalization in mosques", said Zara, who like many local residents declined to give CNN her last name.

Video taken in the immediate aftermath of the incident and posted on social media showed people screaming as bystanders performed chest compressions on one of the injured.

The attack occurred outside the Muslim Friendship Centre across the road from the Mosque.

"I'm totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park tonight". But in the past decade, the mosque has transformed its image, with its leadership outspoken in advocating interfaith harmony.

Saadiq Mizou, a 35-year-old chef originally from Belgium, said he'd been outside the scene since 2 a.m.

"There is now an ongoing investigation by our Counter Terrorism Command to establish why this attack was carried out". People are eating, doing charity, doing things like helping people, praying and then going home.

United Kingdom home secretary Amber Rudd described it as an appalling incident and said new funding for security at religious sites had recently been arranged.
