Wind howling as final round at Erin Hills gets under way

Winds gusting up to 25mph were making scoring conditions hard and had forced tournament officials to change the pin position on the par-three 13th before play began.

Scheffler birdied No. 18 for a 1-over 73 in the final round.

Koepka is playing with Tommy Fleetwood, one group ahead of Harman and Justin Thomas. Five players are at double-digit under par through 54 holes.

Scheffler plays for the University of Texas, and Champ plays for Texas A&M.

What a day for Justin Thomas.

Virginia Beach resident Marc Leishman, 0-for-23 at majors in his career, will start round three just three shots off the lead. But Thomas had nine birdies and an eagle to break the record.

There would be another first-time major champion at the U.S. Open, and the winning score would be at double digits under par for the third time in U.S. Open history.

Fifteen of the 18 holes had been cut within seven yards of the edge of the green and despite the 68-man field being separated by eight shots, only former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen had been able to move into the top 15 after nearly four hours' play. Koepka has consistently contended in majors over the last couple years, and seems poised for a breakthrough win. In 2014, he finished fifth at the Masters, second at the U.S. Open and British Open and the third at the PGA Championship. The soft Black Course allowed players to take dead aim, and Barnes opened with rounds of 67 and 65.

Perhaps making it a bit easier is the knowledge that Erin Hills is nowhere near the suffocating sauna that typically affronts players in this tournament. He still built a six-shot lead through 36 holes, despite hitting his tee shot into the ocean on the 18th hole and salvaging bogey.

Jordan Spieth's 2017 U.S. Open didn't go as he wanted it to.

Tommy Fleetwood will try to block out thoughts of the "life-changing" effect of becoming the second English victor in five years in Sunday's final round of the US Open. And then he made birdie on the next hole.

Harman, who is playing his first major since missing the cut in all four in 2015, fired six birdies and one bogey in a 67 to claim pole position in his bid to become the first left-handed victor of the US Open. But Spieth might take some positives moving forward from his final round after having an up-and-down weekend. He shot 81 the next day in a blustery wind. It features a silhouette of Palmer in mid-stride, tossing his visor in the air.

NOTES: Patrick Reed, who shot a 65 on Saturday, wore a red, white and blue ensemble that included the blue trousers he wore during the 2016 Ryder Cup, when the United States captured its first title since 2008.

Brian Harman is the leader at Erin Hills.

Thomas needed an eagle on the par-5 18th hole to reach the feat, and he produced with a deadly-accurate 3-wood from the fairway.

A pair of birdies on the back helped him shoot 74 on the day and 3 over for the tournament.

Fowler's putting has looked great - aside from a brief blip late in round two - which is why he has been able to shake off some inconsistent ball-striking. "I know one thing, if it happened tomorrow and the result is what I want it to be, then I'd probably have a little different feeling". He tees off later Sunday.

Morgan shot 77 and, remarkably, still had the lead at 4-under 212. Kite says "I don't anticipate this being a bloodletting".
