Pakistan demolish India to win maiden Champions Trophy title

After beating Bangladesh in Birmingham Dhoni met Sarfraz his wife Khushbakht and their four-month-old son Abdullah. An adorable

It was the culmination of an impressive tournament from Pakistan who improved as the tournament went on after their poor opener against India.

Pakistan have managed to bounce back in this tournament, defeating South Africa and Sri Lanka in the group stages and England in the semi-finals to book a berth in the final.

So one-sided was the Champions Trophy final between India and Pakistan at The Oval that it was impossible to touch on specific turning points in the game. With time to spare, India napped in its dressing room rather than dwell on being humbled, and woke up refreshed.

Pakistan were 114 for the loss of no wicket after twenty overs.

India seems an experienced side coming into this match, when compared to the side which won the 2013 edition.

However, the big boost for Pakistan will be the availability of pacer Mohammad Amir, who was confirmed fit to play, after missing out on the semifinal against England. Miandad anticipated a yorker so stood in front of the crease. In the next over, Fakhar once again chose to cut loose as he thumped Ashwin for a six and a boundary in the twenty seventh over.

Chasing 268 to win, India hopes looked over when Mahendra Singh Dhoni left in the 43rd over. Then Suresh Raina was run out. Zaman had been similarly reprieved in the morning, when he was caught off a no-ball for three.

Babar Azam scored 46 off 52 balls, and Imad Wasim was 25 not out off 21.

The match, honestly, never belonged to India after they had put Pakistan in to bat.

2014 Asia Cup, Dhaka. It was formalities for Pakistan after that and they clinched the win by bowling out India for 158 in the 31st over.

Sensational youngster Hasan Ali - whose middle overs bowling dismantled players of top teams - bagged Player of the Tournament award and also received the Golden Ball trophy for being the leading wicket-taker in the entire eight-team tournament. His 52-ball knock comprised of four boundaries. The match between the two sides is always special.

"The turnaround has been magnificent", Kohli said.

As it turned out, Pakistan had far too many for them. Incredibly, yet again Bumrah had overstepped yet again and that was the lifeline Zaman needed to get going.

"A guy like Zaman, when players like that get going on their day, it becomes real hard to stop them because I think 80 percent of his shots were high-risk and they were all coming off", Kohli said.

The opening pair broke two records ─ one for the best score posted by Pakistani openers against India in an ICC tournament (86 runs), and the second for the best partnership against India in an ICC tournament when 100 came up for Pakistan in the 18th over.

"We've seen some really surprising results and it's been unbelievable for the fans to watch and for the players to be a part of", Kohli said. "Well played, deserved winners and a great result for Pakistan cricket", former Indian opener Virender Sehwag said.

"So you can only do so much, as I said, as a bowler and as a captain when that is happening, Kohli did sound a tad helpless trying to explain Zaman s performance".

"Don't worry about the India match".

"Hopefully this win, everyone will remember - not today, not tomorrow, but for a very long, long time", said Sarfraz, the wicketkeeper who held the final catch that sparked wild celebrations.
