Macron party wins massive majority in French parliament

Macron's party, which didn't exist 14 months ago and offered novice candidates from civilian life, has drawn from left and right to fill its ranks, effectively blurring the traditional left-right political divide.

Le Pen said party lawmakers would fight against what she called "the harmful projects of the government" and Macron's pro-European, pro-migrant policies. Nationwide, it stood at 17.75% as of noon local time (6 a.m. ET) on Sunday, France's Interior Ministry said on its website, slightly lower than the preceding week.

France's prime minister says French voters have given a clear majority to new French President Emmanuel Macron and his centrist government.

In the final round of France's presidential election, Le Pen lost out to Macron in a vote that had been framed as the country's possible rejection of the European ideal. The lack of interest in the elections will mean that the parliament will not be viewed as representative of all the French people, Le Pen wrote on Twitter, adding that French voters are suffering from a "state of weariness and boredom".

Mr Cambadelis said the party would have to rebuild itself from the top down - he was knocked out of the running for parliament in last week's first round of voting. This was a lower turnout than the first round of voting on June 11, in which 48.7 percent of the electorate came out to vote.

Rivals of President Emmanuel Macron's dominant new party are urging more voters to cast ballots this time in hopes of preventing him from having a crushing majority.

Experts partly blamed voter fatigue following the May 7 election of Macron, plus voter disappointment with politics. With 95 percent of the votes counted, Macron's En Marche! is projected to gain at least 281 seats, while MoDem is heading for at least 39 seats.

The polls, by Kantar-Sofres and Ipsos/Sopra Steria, projected the main opposition force would be conservative party The Republicans and its allies with between 125 and 133 seats.

Jean-Luc Melenchon's far-left La France insoumise (Unbowed France) party and its Communist supporters are expected to hold 30 seats.

Less than half of the 47.5 million-strong electorate turned out last Sunday, a record low that especially punished Marine Le Pen's far-right National Front party.
