Fowler back in the thick of it at US Open

Paul Casey survives up-and-down round to take clubhouse lead at US Open

Scheffler is three shots back of the lead on a jam-packed leaderboard.

"I got a massive break", he said. He did it himself.

The bogey left him with a 4-under 68 for the day and a three-way tie for second place at 11 under - tied with Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas, and one shot behind Brian Harman.

What a day for Justin Thomas. It's a long haul. To dent the field full of red numbers, it had to be. That's for the Quad Cities Open.

The U.S. Open offers a spectacular financial reward to the victor and the high finishers.

Only eight shots separate the leaders from the players who made the cut on the number.

But now it's a record setting place, and so the golf world will remember the old cow pasture fondly even if the Open never returns here.

The 18th hole at Erin Hills has a special flag for the final round of the U.S. Open. Fowler is within two strokes of the lead at minus-10. "I'd love to have another one of those", Thomas said.

"I'm a part of history". It's all pretty self-explanatory in terms of what it means.

"Today I felt really good, played really well".

"I'm proud of the way I hung in there today. And you can't do anything about what anybody else is doing", Fleetwood said. Yesterday he had the latter in spades and he needed it to climb so far up that red-stained leaderboard. Thomas capped off his record day on the 667-yard 18th hole with the prettiest 3-wood he ever hit, stopping 8 feet away on a green where some players struggled to land a wedge.

"I feel comfortable. Being in contention in a major is new and I'm excited", said Thomas.

Reed is tied with Charley Hoffman and Tommy Fleetwood for the lead at 8 under. "That was definitely a bonus".

Harman, who is playing his first major since missing the cut in all four in 2015, fired six birdies and one bogey in a 67 to claim pole position in his bid to become the first left-handed victor of the US Open. 10 and 11, then made five more pars before making a birdie on No. 17.

However, neither Thomas and Fowler aren't the leader heading into Sunday's final round.

"It was an awesome day", Thomas said. I'm sure at some point it will come back here. "I just happened to be in the ideal spot".

The trick now is for Thomas to remember for all the hosannas over his 63, it didn't win him anything.

"But I'm confident that I am prepared for whatever happens", he added, "whether something bad happens or something good happens - I'll just rely on that confidence".

"It's going to be weird", Thomas said of his likely emotions. I knew going into it that it was either going to go in or be close to going in.

"It's the best I've struck the ball in a long time. But I'm looking forward to getting the job done". "Obviously the scores are low but it's still the U.S. Open".

The race for low amateur at the U.S. Open is down to Cameron Champ's last two holes. The beauty of golf is that's up to you. It can be a dream or it can be a nightmare.
