The reaction to The Great Get Together has surprised even Brendan Cox

BRITAIN-EU-POLITICS-SHOOTING

Mr Watson, the MP for West Bromwich East MP said the day of Jo Cox's death as "undoubtedly the worst in my life as an MP".

During the event on Sunday at Priory Park, there will be a free market, giving people the chance to swap clothes, toys, games, books and more.

The widower of murdered MP Jo Cox has said he is "so pleased" a passer-by who came to the aid of his stricken wife has been recognised for his bravery.

Jo Cox was campaigner on issues relating to the Syrian Civil War, and founded and chaired the all-party parliamentary group Friends of Syria.

The then MP for Batley and Spen was murdered by a far-right extremist previous year in her West Yorkshire constituency.

More than 100,000 events are to be held around the country to remember the life of Ms. Cox, who was just 41-years-old when she died, leaving behind a husband and two children.

The commemoration dubbed "The Great Get Together" was set up by Cox's family and aims to send out a message of hope.

From June 16 to 18, The Great Get Together is encouraging neighbours and communities to celebrate all the things we have in common, through street parties, shared barbecues and picnics.

"And hopefully we're doing Jo proud by doing the things that she would have been doing".

John added: "I'm pretty sure that if Jo Cox was to see our community, she'd be really chuffed".

"We will not go back to a "them and us" culture where distrust and hate exist and the best way to help end prejudice is by talking to each other and understanding our various communities".

"Events like Jo's death and recent terror attacks bring us together, but it shouldn't just be terrible events which do that, we should look after each other all the time".

"What you see when those frightful things happen is that people do come together and we see the best of community spirit", she said.

"We need to stand together and show the people who want to divide us that we are united".

"We have prayed God's Kingdom values of justice, love and peace and the Gospel of Jesus Christ might transform the hearts of people who would sow hatred and fear".

Mair was jailed for life after being convicted of her murder at the Old Bailey in November past year.
