Coyotes aquire Hickey, Johnson and draft pick

The Calgary Flames announced on Saturday that they have acquired goaltender Mike Smith from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for UFA Chad Johnson unsigned prospect Brandon Hickey and a conditional 3rd round draft pick

The deal is an interesting one for the Flames.

The Calgary Flames, needing a goaltender, acquired big veteran Mike Smith from the Arizona Coyotes for the rights to Brandon Hickey, who is a third-round pick from 2014 just completing his third year at Boston University, and negotiating rights to goalie Chad Johnson. Smith's cap hit is $5.67 million for two more seasons where Elliott's cap hit this season was $2.5 million. It's a deal he signed a little over one year after posting an outlying.930 save percentage and leading the Coyotes to the third round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After four years with the Lightning, he signed as a UFA with Phoenix in 2011. Johnson is an unrestricted free agent on July 1. The conditional third-round pick becomes a second-rounder if the Flames make the playoffs next season. Acquiring Smith was also a signal the Flames believe Marc-Andre Fleury will accept being chosen by the Golden Knights after Pittsburgh left him unprotected.

Organizationally, the hope is that Smith cannot only help the Flames get to the playoffs, but that they can then do some damage once they're there.

Overall, Smith totalled a 128-132-41 record with a 2.69 GAA and a.916 save percentage in 312 games with the Coyotes over six seasons.

Smith, a veteran of 12 National Hockey League seasons, signed a six year deal with the Coyotes in 2013 that will see him remain under contract through the 2018-2019 season with a salary cap hit of $5.67 million in both 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.

It's been a half decade since Miikka Kiprusoff's last full season, which happens to coincide with Smith's fourth-place finish in Vezina Trophy voting.

It's possible Smith's numbers go up a little bit playing behind a much better team in Calgary but I still don't like this deal for the Flames.
