Celebrate Juneteenth at these four events in the Seattle area

"Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery".

The Cobb chapter of the NAACP will host a three-day celebration of Juneteenth on Marietta Square this weekend. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that all slaves were free. Now recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in 45 states, it's a celebration of the contributions of African Americans throughout history.

"June what?" he asked Shannon Osteen, 45, as the Oak Cliff youth leaned up from a red beanbag chair at the Martin Luther King Community Center branch library in South Dallas.

The festival begins today with an "Evening Under the Stars", a night of jazz, blues and spoken word. Free food, a bouncy house for the kids, music and a free education on how Juneteenth came about. "As much as the Fourth of July is celebrated, so should Juneteenth". The event is at Morrill Meadows Park, 10600 S.E. 248th St., in Kent.
