Britain-EU Brexit Talks to Start Monday as Planned

Brussels has warned that time is running out to start the talks with Britain on divorce terms and a future trade deal

Davis appears keen to use the residency rights issue to show that his Whitehall team - said to be in chaos following two high-profile departures last week - is ready to negotiate with the European Union, and has the mandate to do so following the loss of a Conservative majority at last week's election.

If the chastened prime minister and Brexit Secretary David Davis take a gentler tone when talks finally launch in Brussels next week, they could win valuable concessions, some think.

Sinn Fein's Stormont leader Michelle O'Neill said: "I will be making it very clear that any deal between the Tories and the DUP can not be allowed to undermine the Good Friday and subsequent agreements".

According to the statement issued on Thursday, the European Union and the United Kingdom are set to begin negotiations on Article 50, which was triggered on March 29 and sets out the procedure for withdrawing from the 27-member bloc, reports Efe news.

The UK is due to leave the European Union by the end of March 2019.

"We want to end the anxiety facing 4 million citizens".

Barnier speaks of a willingness to look at various options but EU officials also stress that greater access to EU markets will mean accepting greater costs, closer to EU membership, and question whether Britain can find a political consensus on that.

Prompted by her poor election showing, particularly among pro-EU young people who fear losses of jobs and opportunity for Brexit, some of her most senior ministers and two former Conservative prime ministers have called for a rethink.

"We've set out the broad principles from where we will start the negotiation and we will negotiate in good faith, but it is a negotiation and we recognize there will be an exchange of views and we will take that forward in a spirit of genuine cooperation", Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond told reporters in Luxembourg on Friday.

"We believe that the withdrawal process can not be concluded without the future relationship also being taken into account".

"Our view is that a withdrawal agreement and terms of the future relationship must be agreed alongside each other", a spokesman for Britain's Brexit ministry said.

London has said it wants formal political talks between Barnier and Brexit minister David Davis to start next Monday but it since Thursday's election it has not formally committed to the date.

The Department for Exiting the EU (DExEU) said it had been "crystal clear" about its approach to Brexit talks.
