Atari's New Console Sounds Like a Bad Idea

Above Atari CEO Fred Chesnais at E3

The video showed close up shots of what seemed like a retro console with wood paneling, quite like the legendary Atari 2600 itself.

Atari's CEO said Ataribox will be based on PC technology and more details regarding the design will be revealed at a later date. However, with the confirmation of Atari CEO Fred Chesnais, the Ataribox does appear to be a thing.

In hopes to redeem what was once a legendary video game company, Atari has just been confirmed working on a gaming hardware. Are you looking forward to what Atari will bring to the table? Atari liberally licences out its classic games and the Atari Flashback 8 Gold was one of Gizmodo's picks for best hardware at this year's E3. This could mean that Atari is not carving a new path but joining the growing console war instead.

"The company, known for developing classic games like "Asteroids", Crystal Castles" and "Space Invaders", recently teased a new website and video for Ataribox. The publication has speculated that Atari "might be cashing in on the popularity of retro games and Nintendo NES Classic Edition". Focusing on recent history, Atari was purchased by European publisher Infogrames in 2001 and filed for bankruptcy in 2013.

All we can do is wait and see if Ataribox will be a triumphant return for the legendary gaming brand or more of an E.T. sort of deal for the company.
