Secret Service says it doesn't have any Trump tapes

If there are tapes can the White House be forced to turn them over

"In response to your request, the Secret Service has conducted a reasonable search for responsive records", the agency wrote.

Trump himself sparked rampant speculation a month ago when he tweeted that Comey had better hope there aren't tapes before he goes talking to the press, a few days after the president canned the country's top G-Man.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday an announcement would come "when the president is ready to make it".

Specifically, the Wall Street Journal requested any information pertaining to all recording systems installed by the Secret Service or any other agency within the White House on or after November 8, 2017, as well as any recordings or transcripts of any recordings made after the inauguration within the White House.

The report notes that the Secret Service has "handled recording systems within the White House for past presidents, including presidents Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy".

Knowing this, another reporter asked what's stopping the president from releasing tapes that supposedly exonerate President Trump from obstructing justice.

The tapes, if they existed would prove Comey's assertions, forming the basis of an obstruction of justice case against Trump, which if proven could lead to an eventual impeachment. If they did not hear them shortly, you would disappoint when you look to the Comey answers. Administration staffers still haven't answered the question.

Trump said at a news conference Friday that he would reveal if he taped the conversations "over a very short period of time".

"I think the President made it very clear on Friday that he would get back as soon as possible on this and his position on that conversation", Spicer said.

The records, had they existed, may not have been publicly released immediately anyways, as they fall under the Presidential Records Act, which are not necessarily subject to FOIA, especially while the president is still in office.
