President Trump says he is 'canceling' Obama-era Cuba deal

During last year's presidential campaign, Trump threatened to "terminate" deals that the Obama administration made with Cuba. "We don't want USA dollars to prop up a military monopoly that exploits and abuses the citizens of Cuba", Trump said, pledging that USA sanctions would not be lifted until Cuba frees political prisoners and holds free elections.

And he challenged the Cuban government to enter into talks with US officials toward a new agreement that would be in the "best interests" of Americans, Cubans and Cuban-Americans.

President Donald Trump has announced new rules that will take away numerous freedoms Americans now enjoy to travel to Cuba; in Miami Friday afternoon, Trump said Americans can no longer travel as individuals in person-to-person exchanges to one of Florida's nearest global neighbors.

President Trump announced at an event in Miami, Friday that he would be effecting changes in USA foreign policy toward Cuba effective immediately.

He explained that Trump affirmed that he will not lift sanctions until the regime releases all political prisoners and schedules free and internationally supervised elections.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report. The OFAC document doesn't mention traveler allowances for buying Cuban cigars or other goods, which was expanded during the Obama administration.

The goal of the White House policy is to halt the flow of USA cash to the country's military and security services in a bid to increase pressure on Cuba's government.

The US has long said its poor ties with Havana are due to the country's communist history and apparent attendant rights violations, but China's ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) has never deterred Washington from pursuing lucrative trade agreements with Beijing.

Under the changes, Washington will tighten rules on individual US citizens travelling to Cuba.

The son of a Cuban immigrant, Rubio opposed Obama's re-engagement with Cuba, saying Obama was making concessions to an "odious regime". Remittances to Cuba won't be cut off.

But individual "people-to-people" trips by Americans to Cuba, allowed by Obama for the first time in decades, will again be prohibited.

Americans can still travel to Cuba for 12 allowed reasons, and use a plane, cruise ship or passenger boat to get there, according to a Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) PDF document outlining pending Cuba policy changes. I also said countries should take great responsibility for creating stability in their own regions.

The president said the changes will take effect immediately, but the details still need to be written out and we're still waiting on the specifics to be announced.

The change in the USA posture toward Cuba under Trump marks the latest policy about-face by the president.

"Whether its 6 months or 6 years, Cuba will be free", Rubio declared. But some of those people are not so sure that's what will happen.

Trump is not reversing all of Obama's Cuba policy; the two nations, for example, will still have re-opened embassies in their capital cities.
