Admin revokes blocked program to protect immigrant parents

Trump Administration Ends Program Protecting Undocumented Immigrant Parents From Deportation

"Today, we received the unfortunate news that DHS Secretary John Kelly, after consulting Attorney General Jeff Sessions, has rescinded the Obama-era memoranda known as DAPA, which provided protection from deportation for parents of USA citizens and lawful permanent residents", Rodriguez explained.

Trump has made immigration enforcement a top priority and has vowed to continue a crackdown on those living in the US illegally and those trying to sneak into the country.

The program, which was announced by President Barack Obama in 2014, never took effect because it was blocked in a federal court. Immigration advocates also condemned DHS' rejection Thursday of a proposal that would've expended DACA to include new recipients.

The statement asserts that there is "no credible path forward". He also recited the administration's new "priorities" that had led to the sharp increase in deportation of undocumented immigrants. Yet as president, he repeatedly expressed empathy with the young participants in the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.

"This rescission will not affect the terms of the original DACA program as outlined in the June 15, 2012 memorandum", the department said online. "He told me to secure the Southwest border - all of our borders, and, of course, focusing now on the Southwest border - and to take the worst of those that are in our country illegally, take them - look for them and deport them".

Immigration activists were pleased with the initial announcement made by the DHS, but remain concerned with the future of DACA. Nearly a quarter (23 percent) said DACA recipients should be forced to leave the country. "DACA has not changed".

Others cheered Kelly's decision, which many saw as long overdue.

Both groups were targeted by Trump during his presidential campaign, in a pledge to end President Obama's "illegal executive amnesties". That was done exactly five years ago Thursday, with the President arguing that the youths had come to the US illegally but only by the action of their parents and had grown up to be responsible young people; the policy did not make them eligible for citizenship. The program was created by President Barack Obama in 2014 to protect people living in the United States illegally who have children who are USA citizens or legal residents.

Thanks for your continued support.

.

However, his administration has made no apologies about pursuing stricter immigration enforcement.

In fact, the White House spokesman said, the statement was only meant to clarify that the rescission of the program for parents would have no impact on the program for immigrants who arrived as children.
