Elizabeth Banks Apologizes for Forgetting 'The Color Purple' in Steven Spielberg Comments

39;Pitch Perfect 2'

The 43-year-old actress issued an apology to Steven Spielberg on Thursday after she incorrectly stated that the director has "never made a movie with a female lead" during the Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, while accepting an award from the non-profit group, the 'Pitch Perfect 2' director expressed her frustration at the lack of roles available for women. "I don't mean to call your ass out but it's true", Elizabeth said during her speech.

Banks said that she is thrilled that her sons will grow up watching films with the kinds of characters she never saw on screen as a child, like Anna and Elsa from "Frozen", and the new "Wonder Woman". Several people took to Twitter to slam the actress for conveniently forgetting about the one movie on Spielberg's lengthy list of titles that actually did star a female lead, which just so happened to be a black woman.

So technically, it's been 32 years since Spielberg has cast an adult female-led role for one of his movies.

Almost 32 years after hitting theaters, The Color Purple began to trend on Twitter after actress Elizabeth Banks comments about Spielberg were made public.

Since Banks' controversial comments, social media has been going insane over her forgetting about the historical drama.

Yep. And Twitter made sure to remind Banks about the 1985 classic. Basically, black Twitter said a movie with African-American female leads doesn't even register on the radar of someone like Banks because she's so steeped in her "white privilege".

Banks does still have a fair point, as the majority of Spielberg's films have featured male protagonists. To this day, that movie is the reason Oprah's favorite color in the whole world is purple. The film grossed more than $140 million worldwide and received 11 Oscar nominations (but no wins). His movie "The Sugarland Express", which starred Goldie Hawn in 1974, was followed up almost a decade later with "The Color Purple". The new movie stars Meryl Streep as Kay Graham, the first female major newspaper publisher, who published the Pentagon Papers while working at the Washington Post.

Banks was quick to correct herself, admitting she was wrong, only to second guess that guess.
