Trump calls for unity after Scalise shooting

US Congressman Steve Scalise was shot when a gunman opened fire during baseball practice

Iowa lawmakers reacted with alarm and prayer Wednesday after a shooting at a congressional Republican baseball practice in Washington, D.C., resulted in several people wounded, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana.

The shooting marks the first time a sitting member of Congress has been shot since Rep.

Praising the actions of law enforcement officers and first responders, Trump said the suspected assailant - identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Ill.

The shooter died in custody as a result of wounds he suffered during a shootout with police following the incident, President Trump said in a brief statement.

A total of five people were taken to local hospitals, but it was not clear if there were others injured. A statement from his office said he was in good condition and was able to speak to his wife before surgery.

Trump initially responded to the event with a tweet.

President Donald Trump decried the shooting of a top House Republican on Wednesday as a "very, very brutal assault" and called for all Americans to set aside differences and pray for the recovery of the victims.

None of the lawmakers representing Iowa, or the Quad-Cities, was at the practice. "I hear Steve Scalise over near second base scream".

Witnesses described dozens of shots fired by the attacker and Capitol Police, who are normally assigned to guard Scalise due to his high position in the Congress.

Speaker Paul Ryan addressed the House saying, "We are united in our shock, united in our anguish".

He drew a comparison to when former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others were shot in a grocery store parking lot in Tucson, Arizona back in January of 2011.

Capitol police said it had increased police presence at the Capitol on Wednesday morning out of "an abundance of caution", as Republican politicians gave vivid descriptions of the shooting. "We are shocked by such an incident in our peaceful community". He tells them that they went to Iowa to campaign for Senator Bernie Sanders's presidential campaign. "Thank you for the many who have asked about me and offered support", Marshall said in a statement.

George Takei wrote, "The shooting in Alexandria this AM was a senseless horrific act".

This morning the hearts of the whole House are with @SteveScalise, the courageous Capitol police, staff, and all those who were in harm's way.
