Clinging on to her job, Britain's May appoints new ministers

Many senior Conservatives say May should stay, for now, to provide stability.

But in one of the most sensational nights in British electoral history, a resurgent Labour Party denied her an outright win, throwing the country into political turmoil.

"We had weak jobs data last week, but I think they are really on path to hike rates", Trang said.

On a humiliating night for the Prime Minister the Tories slipped from a total of 331 seats to 318, while Labour gained 32 seats to reach 262.

According to some reports, May had offered to resign immediately but was talked out of it by colleagues dreading what yet another election would do to them, in the face of a suddenly popular and apparently electable Jeremy Corbyn.

Prime Minister Theresa May leaves Downing Street to go to Buckingham Palace for the Queen's permission to form a United Kingdom government.

Spokesperson for the Office of the British Prime Minister (10 Downing Street ) said that Brexit talks will go ahead as planned. Ms May is expected to form a minority government with the help of the Democratic Unionist Party (of Northern Ireland), which is likely to offer informal support.

"We were waiting for the election in Britain but in the next few days these talks will begin", she said.

Corbyn's Labour Party officially backs Brexit.

Instead, the result has sown confusion and division in British ranks, just days before negotiations are due to start on June 19.

Unlike the Labour Party - which sweetened its platform with things like free tuition for university students - the Conservative Party contained little to get people excited.

With parliament in deadlock, Tories MPs may oust Mrs May and call for a General Election when a new leader is in place.

European Union leaders expressed fears that May's shock loss of her majority would delay the Brexit talks, due to begin on June 19, and so raise the risk of negotiations failing.

So is Britain's European Union exit now in doubt?

"We need a government that can act", EU Budget Commissioner Guenther Oettinger told German broadcaster Deutschlandfunk.

May, who took over after the June 2016 Brexit referendum, began the formal two-year process of leaving the European Union on March 29, promising to take Britain out of the single market and cut immigration. The result ended his career and shocked Europe.

Ruth Davidson, leader of Conservatives in Scotland, where the party did well, said the results showed the Conservatives should prioritize good trade relations with the EU. "Whoever it is, they are going to have to make deals with other political parties, and nearly every other political party that has an MP in the new parliament wants a softer version of Brexit", says French. The Conservatives' other coalition options are limited.

Labour's Corbyn, reveling in a storming campaign performance after pundits had pronounced his party all but dead, said May should step down and that he wanted to form a minority government.

Speaking at his north London constituency's election headquarters, Corbyn said May called the election to get a new mandate and the "mandate she got was one of lost support".

May called the election three years early in the hope of building on her sky-high personal poll ratings, and focused the campaign around her own leadership qualities. She needs 18 more seats, with only 17 more seats left to declare. A position she held for six years prior to becoming Prime Minister.
