Sessions' testimony to Congress Tuesday to be open to public

Jeff Sessions to Testify to Intel Panel Tuesday to Rebut Comey

The ex-FBI director said federal law enforcement had expected Sessions to recuse himself from the investigation into the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, strongly suggesting he knew more than has been publicly revealed about Sessions's contacts with Moscow officials.

During former FBI Director James Comey's public testimony before the intelligence committee last week, he highlighted Sessions's role in the Trump team's connections with Russian Federation and hinted at more that could not be revealed in a public setting.

Keeping with the Trump administration's anti-immigration agenda, Sessions has also urged federal prosecutors to intensify their focus on immigration crimes such as illegal border crossing or smuggling others into the U.S. And he has threatened to withhold coveted grant money from localities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities as they try to detain and deport people.

Sessions said in a letter on Saturday that he would appear before the committee to address matters that Comey brought up last week in testimony to the same panel.

Sessions will also face questions arising from sacked Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey's public hearing by the same committee last week.

Over the weekend, Sessions asked to appear before the Intelligence Committee instead of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees, where he was expected to appear to discuss Department of Justice funding. Why did he do that, and why shouldn't Trump's repeated one-on-one interactions with Comey pose a reason for concern?

The attorney general is also expected to push back on the notion that he committed perjury when he denied having had any communications with Russians during the presidential campaign a year ago, the source said.

One aspect of the Comey hearing that was overwhelmed by the newsworthiness of his comments was his refusal to speak to the nature of Sessions' recusal from the Russian Federation investigation in an open hearing. Sessions didn't mention any meeting with Kislyak as a senator during his confirmation process but later as attorney general he recused himself from the investigation into Russian meddling in the election.

Diane Marie Amann, a law professor at University of Georgia, agreed with Spicer that invoking privilege was possible: "It depends on the questions that are asked", she said.

To accommodate schedules, the hearing will be held at the normal time that the Senate Intelligence panel meets each Tuesday.

Of special interest will be Comey's assertion that he told Sessions after the meeting that he never again wanted to be left alone with the president. Comey testified that in the privacy of the Oval Office, the President asked him to let the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn drop.

Sessions recused himself from the investigation into Russian hacking and alleged ties to Trump months before Comey was sacked. Comey welcomed any tapes during his hearing, and congressional investigators have asked the White House to produce them if they exist.

Democratic lawmakers scolded Sessions for refusing to answer questions in a session open to the American people.

Later, Comey said he was so uncomfortable that he went to Sessions to "implore" him "to prevent any future direct communication between the President and me". Comey spoke of receiving pressure from Trump to drop a probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation. "Sessions actually offered to resign, even though his friends say he doesn't want to leave, but Trump has refused to accept that resignation".
