Ossoff Declines Debate story

The candidates in the nation's most expensive congressional election in history debated each other directly for the first time Tuesday night.

Tuesday night's debate, hosted by Atlanta's WSB-TV, put the spotlight on Ossoff and Handel - the two remaining candidates out of an original lineup of 18 - and what has become the most expensive race of its kind in USA history. I was born and raised in Georgia, unlike Secretary Handel, who was born and raised in Washington, D.C.

Handel said that raising the minimum wage could hurt small businesses. Because the Democrat literally can't vote for himself because he doesn't live in the district in which he's running for office.

Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel tangled over numerous same big-ticket policy items that dominated last year's presidential contest, from terrorism to health care and campaign finance.

"Who are you going to vote for in this election?"

On Tuesday, the eyes of the nation will be on Georgia, for a live debate in what has become the most expensive race of its kind in US history.

Overall, Handel aligned herself with the president when asked about the biggest items on his agenda, but she also indicated she wasn't afraid of disagreeing with him. Handel said the federal government worked best on such issues when it gets out of the way.

"It is abundantly clear what we are doing is not enough, and we must put all options on the table", she said. And Ossoff - who supports Planned Parenthood and women's health care - was absolutely right to challenge her on her record because obviously, she has no good answer.

Mr. Trump's name, however, was rarely mentioned, and most notably came up when Ms. Handel was asked where she might disagree with the commander in chief. "As chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, I was able to balance a budget without tax increases. Ours has gone from $300 to $1,200 [.] so the status quo is unacceptable".

For his part, Mr. Ossoff passed on chances to link Ms. Handel to Mr. Trump and instead made the case that he would bring a "fresh" perspective and an "independent" vision to Washington.

"Voters need to understand that [.] and that Handel sees fit to impose her own views", he said.

Though she backed the bill, Handel told a personal story - citing a sister born with pre-existing conditions - to underscore her argument that she'd never back a bill that undercut coverage for those with pre-existing conditions.

He went on to hammer Handel for her tenure as an executive at the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Handel resigned from the charity in 2012 and later wrote a book called "Planned Bullyhood" about the group's decision to reverse course on its decision to cut ties with Planned Parenthood because of abortion.
