Comey to testify Trump pressured him to end Russian Federation probe

President Donald Trump

CNN reported that Comey has discussed the parameters of his congressional testimony with special counsel Robert Mueller, who has taken over the criminal investigation.

Politico wrote Rosenstein might have to recuse himself from the probe that is looking into whether President Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation because of his actions before Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. He writes that he has no desire to "impede or interfere" with Mueller's investigation and that his investigation will focus on "the independence of the FBI, including conversations between the President and Comey and the process by which Comey was removed from his role as director".

Although Comey is unlikely to discuss the details of the FBI's investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, CNN reports that he seems eager to discuss his interactions with Trump leading up to his firing, a move that led many to believe that the president was intentionally attempting to obstruct the investigation.

CNN's source said that Comey is "happy to testify" and "happy to cooperate".

At the time when he fired the FBI director, Trump said Comey who had been leading an FBI investigation into allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election was no longer able to effectively lead the law-enforcement agency. Earlier this month, President Donald Trump suddenly fired Comey amid an FBI investigation into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with the Kremlin to influence the 2016 election.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", Trump said, according to a memo written by Comey, The Times reported.

Comey, according to sources familiar with his thinking, wants to be transparent and will respond to questions about his relationship with Trump. Former White House staffer Boris Epshteyn confirmed he has been contacted for information as part of the House investigation.

He has also spoken to Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, about what he will be allowed to reveal during his testimony.

Any direct testimony from Comey echoing the idea that the firing was an act of obstruction could potentially be a bombshell development in the case.

Some critics have suggested that the president's behavior with Comey - coupled with his requests to senior intelligence officials that they state publicly they had seen no evidence of Trump campaign collusion with Russian Federation - could amount to obstruction of justice.
