Bill Maher's use of racial slur on HBO show draws criticism

Bill Maher left speaks with Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska during a segment of his

Today, Bill Maher known for being unapologetic for his comedy, has issued a mea culpa saying he went too far by using the N-word on Friday night's episode of HBO's Real Time.

Maher was interviewing Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse and joked that he should get to Nebraska more often, prompting Sasse to invite Maher to come "work in the fields with us". Here's what I wish I'd been quick enough to say in the moment: "Hold up, why would you think it's OK to use that word?" A completely unsurprising turn of events considering it's common knowledge that saying the n-word is highly offensive and there was absolutely no reason for Maher to have used it in the first place.

Maher responded, "Work in the fields?" Maher replied. "Senator, I am a house (expletive)". Sasse briefly kept quiet. "There are no explanations that make this acceptable". "We are removing his deeply offensive comment from any subsequent airing of the show", the network said in a statement. "I'm a 1st Amendment absolutionist". Sasse commented that adults did not do that in his state, and Maher said "I've got to get to Nebraska more".

Sasse wrote Saturday that he wished he had immediately criticized Maher for using the term.

In this photo provided by HBO, Bill Maher, left, speaks with Sen. "You can not allow folk to act like there's anything amusing in that context about using that word".

After a night to think about it, Bill Maher decided to make a very rare apology, which so far seems to be enough for D.L. Hughley.

Criticism and calls to #FireBillMaher quickly emerged on Twitter after the show aired. It's therefore an attack on the American Creed. In fact, one of his favorite targets is organized religion, and he wrote and appeared in the documentary "Religulous" in 2008. "Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it's not cowardly".
