What was James Comey thinking when he met with Trump?

They say they also hope Comey's testimony will answer questions that have arisen since Comey's sudden firing by President Donald Trump. While the justices said conversations between presidents and top aides were presumed confidential, they said the privilege is not absolute. Now he personally might become a part of the probe, as investigators consider whether Trump obstructed justice in firing him or in interacting with him before his dismissal.

Comey is expected to be asked about conversations in which Trump reportedly pressured him to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, one of several Trump associates who are drawing scrutiny about Russian Federation and last year's US election. Facing rising pressure, the Justice Department last month named Robert Mueller, another former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief, as a special counsel to investigate the matter.

But to add emphasis to the collusion conspiracy, Senator Al Franken (D-MN) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) released a joint letter written to Comey on April 28, asking for additional information regarding Attorney General Jeff Sessions' relationship with the Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak. The court ruled that President Richard Nixon's audio recordings of White House conversations should be turned over to prosecutors.

Earlier this week, the White House was said to be "jump starting" the search for Comey's replacement by interviewing two new candidates for the job.

Until he was sacked on May 9, Comey was leading the FBI's investigation into Russian meddling, which had started back in July.

If the White House did block Comey, it would also spark a political outcry and perhaps damage Trump even more than any unflattering testimony.

Four were issued to ousted national security adviser Flynn, the president's personal attorney, Michael Cohen, and their respective companies.

The Russian government has denied U.S. intelligence agencies' conclusion that it sought to influence the election in Trump's favour, but Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that some Russian individuals may have acted on their own.

He also said the USA intelligence agencies were cooperating with the House panel and that it was therefore unclear why Nunes would issue the subpoenas, which constitute a formal demand for information. "I think loyalty to the country, loyalty to the USA, is important".

Are there any limits to what Comey can say?

He said Nunes recused himself from the investigation but still insists on having a final say in what subpoenas are issued in the Russian Federation investigation.

AshLee Strong, a spokeswoman for Ryan, R-Wis., said that while Conaway leads the Russian Federation investigation, Nunes remains the committee chairman and has the "right and responsibility to conduct oversight of the intelligence community, especially as it relates to the potential misuse of intelligence agencies against Americans". The GOP staffer, who was not authorized to discuss the issue publicly and spoke only on condition of anonymity, said the chairman has the authority to sign off on subpoenas and that all the committee rules were followed.
