Trump Vows to Move Embassy to Jerusalem, but, Like, Not Right Now

Far right Israeli supporters wave Israeli flags as they pass through Damascus Gate in Jerusalem's Old City

"But, as he has repeatedly stated his intention to move the embassy, the question is not if that move happens, but only when". Numerous leaders, including Palestinian officials, told Trump that establishing the embassy in Jerusalem would harm the U.S.'s ability to help broker the "ultimate deal" in peace talks.

"Despite the disappointment at the lack of transfer of the embassy at this time, Israel appreciates President Trump's friendship and his commitment to the subsequent transfer of the embassy", the statement concluded.

The Palestinian ambassador to Washington, Husam Zomlot, said the move "gives peace a chance".

Israel's prime minister says the USA decision not to move its embassy to Jerusalem has hurt the prospects for peace with the Palestinians.

Although Trump signed a waiver, he could still move the embassy after six months, or issue an executive order overriding the waiver before it expires.

"For many Jews in America, it is a kind of symbol".

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the move has hurt the prospects for peace with the Palestinians. As the Independent explains, the decision goes back to a 1995 congressional ruling that Israel's capital should be Jerusalem.

The whole matter boils down to symbolism. The United Nations' original partition plan from 1947 on Palestine called for Jerusalem to be an worldwide city. Israel considers all of the city its indivisible capital. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

In 1947, the United Nations presented its plan for Palestine: partitioning the land into an Arab state and a Jewish state. Jerusalem is home to sites considered holy by the Jewish, Muslim and Christian religions. "The Jerusalem embassy issue is more for Pence's evangelical base than the Trump base", said Goldenberg. The longstanding USA position is that Jerusalem's fate must be worked out through Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

Trump did not discuss the waiver publicly during his visit to Jerusalem late last month. But ever since, presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama used the waiver option built into the law, which allows them to postpone implementation for six months due to national security reasons.

Today, no country has an embassy in Jerusalem.

"[Israeli] politicians didn't make a big deal about it".

The same official said that while Trump may not authorize the move this week, the President still envisions moving the embassy at some point.
