Sehwag applies for India coaching job

Virender Sehwag

He has played alongside most of the players for Team India and that will undoubtedly have a huge bearing when Sehwag's candidature is discussed. Kumble has been vocal about the need for his players to be paid well.

"It is impossible for that to happen because the coach had played in the earlier generation and that's why the approach may be slightly different from the current generation". Given the sensitivity of the matter and his relationship with all concerned figures - be it Kumble, Kohli or even Shastri - Tendulkar has been maintaining a stoical silence. But the two issues should not be connected, said an official. "Kumble was pushing hard. The bulk of them [injuries] are non-cricketing injuries", the official said. One of the players was stressed out. In the team hotel and team gatherings, they do apparently talk about the common issues but it is definitely not a happy situation.

What has surprised the BCCI is that Kumble has failed to read these concerns.

He then added: "The way the cricket set-up works in India is the coach is not the king. So the coach has to understand that". It all started when the BCCI decided not to accord Kumble with auto contract extension, and invited fresh applications.

The latest move by the national cricket board has also fuelled speculation that the players are unhappy with the coach's style of functioning. "However, the ones who will make a decision are the Cricket Advisory Committee", he said. Meanwhile, few of the BCCI officials have asked former Indian opener Virender Sehwag to apply for India's top post.

"Kumble was given a one-year contract. I am simply going by the results and when you go by the results of a year ago, you can say he has done nothing wrong", said Gavaskar, the first batsman to breach the 10,000-run mark in Tests. "It is not from a single source to say the least".

As India prepare to launch their tournament against Pakistan in Birmingham on Sunday, Indian media is abuzz with reports of differences between Kohli and Kumble over tactics and training. It has asked two of its technical committee members - Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar - both of whom are now in England to talk to both Kumble and Kohli. But it was at the panel's insistence that he was put in. However, Kumble is an automatic entrant into the process.

It is said that Kohli also had a word with Sourav Ganguly during a practice session for the Champions Trophy. "I'm not sure whether these reports of a rift between Kumble and Kohli are true or not but the timing of this is certainly not right". Kumble might not be holding the steering wheel anymore.
