Merkel hosts Indian leader Modi, looks to broaden world ties

"One day after Donald Trump infuriated Angela Merkel and the rest of his G-7 peers, when the USA president refused to endorse the Paris climate treaty, prompting the German chancellor to say that “the whole discussion about climate has been hard, or rather very unsatisfactory. here we have the situation that six members, or even seven if you want to add the European Union, stand against one", Germany's prime minister made what many have dubbed, an "era-defining" statement.

"EU unity, proactiveness and strong relations with other countries is extremely important for global development". The International Monetary Fund said in its 2016 report on German that the country's real effective exchange rate is undervalued by 10-20 per cent.

"He said his dad is from Germany".

Merkel last week said that reliable ties forged since the end of World War II "are to some extent over".

Martin Schulz, leader of the center-left Social Democrats, told reporters Trump was "the destroyer of all Western values", adding that the US president was undermining the peaceful cooperation of nations based on mutual respect and tolerance. Germany's Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel also blasted the United States, saying the Trump administration's "short-sighted policies".

Chancellor Merkel has restated her position that Europe must seek new alliances. Her conditional offer of support, made the day after Trump's election, was meant as both an invitation to work together and a subtle warning.

Those comments, which caused shock in Washington, vented Europe's frustration with Mr Trump on climate policy in particular.

But when it comes to support for the Paris climate deal, Britain, France, Germany and Italy reaffirmed support for the Paris deal when their leaders met Trump at the G-7 summit last week.

"Europe and the world are facing lots of challenges and to fight those, India believes, the world needs the strong leadership of Chancellor Merkel", Modi added. The ever-diplomatic German leader, who carefully refrained from making controversial statements about Turkey in recent years despite bilateral tensions, suddenly took a jab at Britain and the United States, which is why Mrs. Merkel's comments were important.

"We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands", she said on Sunday and echoed the sentiment again during her press conference with PM Narendra Modi. "This is what I have experienced in the last few days". Instead, Trump reiterated that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies should pay their share of the defense budget so as to reach 2 percent of their GDP, which means that as of now, the collective defense mechanism rests upon the premise of conditionality.

"Very bad for (the) US. This will change (sic)", he tweeted.

She said that in the year 2000, India and Germany had agreed to have a strategic partnership and in 2011both sides had enhanced their strength and partnership by agreeing to have inter-governmental consultations. The government chooses to run budget surpluses rather than step up borrowing and spending, even with interest rates at historic lows.

Germany is the largest trade partner for India in the European Union and one of the leading sources of foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country.
