Scott Pelley out as 'CBS Evening News' anchor

Scott Pelley is reportedly no longer at CBS Evening News thanks to network drama

The 59-year-old reporter has served as the show's anchor since taking over for Katie Couric back in 2011.

Pelley had the contents of his "CBS Evening News" office packed Monday while he was off on assignment for "60 Minutes", which led to reports late Tuesday that he was out. CBS News Senior National Corespondent Anthony Mason has been filling in for Pelley, and is expected to do so until CBS names a permanent replacement. Possible future anchors could include Norah O'Donnell of CBS This Morning, Elaine Quijano of CBS Weekend News and the network's digital news services, or even, for a time, CBS This Morning host and long-form interviewer Charlie Rose.

"CBS has been great to me for almost 30 years", Pelley said in a statement. Pelley won respect and some early ratings success in the evening. And Pelley continued to do as many as 20 pieces each season for 60 Minutes, a schedule that left him stretched rather thin. Pelley is now overseas on assignment for "60 Minutes", where he is a contributor; he was unavailable for comment.

CBS shares were down almost 1% in morning trading Tuesday. He will continue to co-anchor "CBS This Morning: Saturday" with Alex Wagner. "I'm glad to accept this assignment with continuing gratitude".

During the May "sweeps" - a quarterly ratings period that helps establish the cost of ads on local stations - "The CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley" lagged far behind the competition at ABC and NBC, finishing in its customary third place.

"Scott's work over many years at 60 MINUTES has been extraordinary".

Side note: if Glor is replacing Pelley, he's already started, as he's anchoring Tuesday night. More significant to Pelley's continued tenure, his newscast had the largest audience decline among the three network newscasts.

Instead, in TV terms, Pelley often came off as stiff, formal and self-important in presideing over an evening news that seemed out of step with the pace of digital media today. However, it was always hard to picture him as an anchor for a news show.
