Trump again urges Senate to loosen rules, push healthcare and tax reforms

President Trump calls first overseas trip 'a great success' despite mixed reviews

President Donald Trump on Tuesday took to Twitter to again call for the end of the Senate filibuster so that healthcare and tax reform can get passed "fast and easy".

Every percentage point cut to the USA corporate tax rate constitutes a $100 billion reduction to federal revenue over the 10-year horizon. "Dems (Democrats) would do it, no doubt!"

Late Tuesday morning President Donald Trump posted a tweet that clearly demonstrates he has no idea how a bill becomes a law in the current Senate session.

Trump's tweet raised some eyebrows, as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has repeatedly sworn not to touch the filibuster for legislation.

But McConnell and Senate Republicans reworked the rules so that the 60-vote rule no longer applied.

Senate faces shrinking timeline for Obamacare repeal

Senate Republicans already nixed the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees, allowing President Trump an early win by confirming Judge Neil Gorsuch to the bench.

The filibuster in the Senate allows lawmakers to hold up legislation if a bill does not pass with 60 votes.

"Sen. McConnell agrees that both health-care and tax reform are essential, and that is why Republicans in Congress are using the reconciliation process to prevent a partisan filibuster of these two critical legislative agenda items", said Antonia Ferrier, a spokeswoman for Mr. McConnell, in a statement. (You may have heard that a time or two over the last 18 months.) And he's not terribly interested in learning the ways in which Washington works.

The GOP plan now rests on a repeal of the 2010 Affordable Care Act, and much of the spending associated with it, and a new set of provisions offering financial assistance and incentives for people to obtain health coverage.

While Democrats resorted to the so-called "nuclear option" in 2013 to eliminate the filibuster for executive branch and judicial nominees - except those to the Supreme Court - they did not change the rules for legislative filibusters.
