Cleveland fires 1 officer, suspends 2nd in Tamir Rice shooting

Cleveland Cop Who Shot And Killed Tamir Rice Fired From The Police Department

At a news conference Tuesday, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson announced that Officer Timothy Loehmann, who shot Tamir, has been terminated from the department effective immediately.

Rice was shot and killed by Loehmann outside Cudell Recreation Center in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 22.

Loehmann was sacked for inaccurate details on his job application, not for the Rice shooting, The Associated Press reported.

A message was left with the police union about the discipline. Officers believed Rice was carrying a weapon, but it turned out to be a toy gun. Garmback's suspension was related to his operation of the patrol auto on the day of the shooting and failing to report his arrival time to radio dispatchers as soon as he arrived at the recreation center.

A county prosecutor announced in December 2015 that Loehmann and Garmback wouldn't be indicted. The officers were called to the scene on a report of a person waving a gun.

The killing became part of a national outcry about police violence against black males.

More than two years after the incident, in January, the Cleveland Police Department announced that they had conducted an additional inquiry into the shooting due to which a third officer named William Cunningham would face administrative charges.

"There's a 12-year-old kid dead", Willisams said.

Cleveland police previously confirmed to News 5 that they did not review Officer Timothy Loehmann's personnel file with Independence police before hiring him.

According to Cleveland.com, Loehmann and officer Frank Garmback were previously issued disciplinary letters. "We have to be fair and objective".

Days earlier, SC police officer Michael Slager admitted to violating the civil rights of an unarmed black man he fatally shot in the back during a traffic stop. The emergency dispatcher was suspended from work for eight days for violating protocol in her handling of the call.

Chief of Police Calvin Williams said the incident had been "tough on the entire community".
