Braves acquire first baseman Matt Adams from Cardinals

St. Louis Cardinals' Matt Adams at bat during the ninth inning of a baseball game. The Chicago Cubs defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Friday

The Braves have found their stop-gap for the injured Freddie Freeman.

When the Atlanta Braves lost All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman for 10 weeks with a broken wrist, opportunity beckoned for Adams. When today's game came back from commercial, Skip Caray and Joe Simpson told us that the Braves had just acquire Matt Adams and cash from the St Louis Cardinals for minor league infield Juan Yepez.

The White Sox reached a deal with the 19-year-old amateur free agent Saturday, the first day he was eligible to sign after months of waiting and working out for teams in showcases and private sessions.

"And so we really felt it was sort of a "win-win" for everybody to try to do this".

Adams is expected to join the Braves in time for Sunday's game against the Washington Nationals.

Adams is still only 28 years old. Freeman was leading the majors in slugging percentage when he was hurt, hitting.341 with 14 home runs. He is a career.271 hitter with 56 home runs and 271 RBIs.

When it was announced that Carpenter would be moving to first base full-time to begin the 2017 season, Adams' future in St. Louis was left uncertain.

"For us, as much as anything, I think this sends a message to our staff". Hart said the Cardinals went through a long list of players they wanted but that the Braves would not discuss before agreeing on Yepez.

"We wouldn't have signed James Loney if we thought the trade would happen", Coppolella said. We realize we're not flawless. Definitely as I sit here now, I feel bad that these types of things had to happen but I also look at where our roster is and what we're trying to do with this club. This year, Yepez has played at Rome (A), where he was batting.275 (39-for-142) with 13 doubles, one home run and 15 RBI in 35 games. If the Braves choose to keep Adams around through next season, then he could be a valuable bench piece.
