White House knew sacked adviser was under investigation

Flynn rejected Obama's offer to arm Syrian Kurds

That call, and Flynn's changing story about it, ultimately led to his firing as Trump's first national security adviser. The sources cited in the Times report note that Flynn notified the Trump transition team about a month after he himself learned he was under investigation. On Wednesday, the Department of Justice named former FBI Director Robert Mueller to be special counsel investigating Russian efforts to influence the US presidential election.

"President Donald Trump pressured a "reluctant" Michael Flynn into accepting a job as the White House's top national security official even after Flynn warned the president that he was under investigation over undisclosed lobbying on behalf of a foreign government", The Daily Beast adds.

Mr. Flynn's disclosure, on January 4, was first made to the transition team's chief lawyer, Donald F. McGahn II, who is now the White House counsel.

According to the report, Flynn declined a request from the Obama administration to approve an operation in the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa, effectively delaying the military operation.

The plan, to retake Raqqa from the Islamic State group, was to be carried out by Syrian Kurdish forces in Raqqa, a measure Turkey has long opposed, reported McClatchy newspapers on Wednesday.

Amid separate charges that Flynn suspiciously, and perhaps illegally, met with Russian officials during Trump's campaign, some on Capitol Hall are starting to view his Turkey ties with the most concern.

While he didn't specifically reference recent controversies plaguing the White House during a speech to the Chamber of Commerce, Pence assured Trump's supporters that Trump would tackle "the issues that matter most to the American people".

Since then, it's emerged that he was paid at least $500,000 to represent Turkey's interests during the 2016 U.S. election campaign and reportedly didn't properly report a speech he gave to RT TV, a media operation widely regarded as a propaganda arm for the Russian government.

Trump fired Flynn in February on other grounds - that he misled Vice President Mike Pence and other White House officials about his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the U.S. Another wrinkle in this disaster comes via McClatchy, who reports that in the early months of Trump's presidency, Flynn's priorities were already influenced by his secret lobbying work for Turkey.

Since he resigned, Flynn - who denies wrongdoing - has retained a lawyer and offered to testify in exchange for immunity from prosecution.
