Tool can decrypt some files in WannaCry ransomware attack

Make sure software patches are routinely applied.

Sixty percent of the ransomware attack attempts by the malicious WannaCry malware were targeted at enterprises, while the rest were against individual customers.

Other sponsors are Rep. Blake Farenthold, R-Texas; and Senators Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii; Ron Johnson, R-Wis.; and Cory Gardner, R-Colo. The tool then uses the key to decrypt all files locked by the WannaCry ransomware.

Russian Federation and China have blamed the US government for events that led to WannaCry. The attackers demanded payment to unlock the computers.

The federal government already has a procedure, the Vulnerabilities Equities Process, or VEP, to notify the technology industry of software problems it discovers. As of Tuesday, some experts claimed that less than $1 million had been paid in ransom, although it was not immediately clear how many victims who had paid had actually regained access to their data.

But VEP has been criticized as opaque.

Utilize antimalware and antivirus software tools and services. Here are some tips from security experts.

Microsoft, despite knowing the vulnerabilities present in its PC software, chose to withhold the release of the security patch for a certain section of clients, which were running older (ex: Windows Vista & Windows XP) versions on their company systems, according to Financial Times.

Brad Smith, the President and Chief Legal Officer of Microsoft has blamed the practice of US's National Security Agency for developing hacking techniques to use against the own enemies of the USA government, while some others have blamed Microsoft's poor programming. That was a month before the mysterious group known as the Shadow Brokers released EternalBlue.

WannaCry landed nine weeks after Microsoft's patch arrived.

Microsoft knew something was brewing as early as January.

Whereas ransomware traditionally leverages email to propagate to unique users, WannaCry also takes advantage of a Windows flaw to replicate across the network to other vulnerable machines, thereby leading to entire organizations being crippled in an amazingly short timeframe. The result: "Users unlikely to get files restored", the company's Security Response team tweeted.

Microsoft declined to comment for this story.

Classic customer help desk procedures typically advise users reporting computer problems to reboot their machines, but fast-acting users who pulled the plug on their PCs or otherwise did not attempt to fix them can benefit, the researchers said.
