More rain means more worry in flooded parts of Midwest

More rains to hit Missouri after deadly weekend flooding

The Joplin area will see abundant sunshine Thursday, while a flash flood watch lingers through Friday at 7 a.m.in Springfield due to ongoing showers.

The lower part of the town was evacuated Monday amid worries a nearby levee wouldn't hold.

Heavy rain last weekend resulted in a sudden rise in rivers in Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas.

Rivers in Louisiana are pouring over their banks after parts of the state were inundated with up to 8 inches of rain. Because of this breach, flooding to the east of the Black River has increased significantly. After a couple of days of calm weather, forecasters expect 2 inches of rain or more in parts of the same hard-hit areas through Thursday.

According to Mark Diedrich, St. Louis County's emergency management agency director, roughly 200 homes have been flooded so far and 1,500 more are threatened in Eureka, Valley Park, Fenton, Sunset Hills, and unincorporated areas along the Meramec River watershed. That would cut off thousands of workers from getting to work and school.

During late April and early May, record flooding occurred at some locations, including along the Black river at Pocahontas, Arkansas; Current River at Doniphan, Arkansas; Meramec at Sullivan, Steelville and Eureka, Missouri; and the Gasconade at Hazelgreen and Jerome, Missouri.

"With the ground completely saturated, some additional flooding is possible, though rain amounts won't be anywhere near what was experienced last weekend", Dolce said. Five people have died in flooding in Missouri, and several towns have sustained damage. This illustrates why large areas of southern Missouri, Illinois, and Arkansas have experienced such significant flooding.

Those affected by catastrophic flooding in northeast Arkansas now face more rain.

Residents piled up sandbags to protect their homes and businesses.

Updated May 4 at noon with updated information - Interstate 55 was reopened in south St. Louis County on Thursday morning, once it became clear that the Meramec River was receding there.

More than 270 roads remain closed, including a 57-mile stretch of Interstate 44 from central to southern Missouri, and a 23-mile stretch in suburban St. Louis.

Fiorilli, his wife and their two dogs were forced to quickly leave when heavy rains pushed the river to near-record levels, some 18 feet above flood stage in Pacific, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of St. Louis. Health officials said floodwater contains raw sewage, chemicals and other potentially toxic items. Wild animals displaced by flooding also pose a potential threat.

Storms and heavy rains that began over the weekend led to flooding that has forced the closure of hundreds of roads in Missouri, Arkansas and IL.

"Thank you to everyone in St. Louis", Blair said at a midday press conference. The forecast calls for mostly dry weather for several days.
