Chinese fighter flies inverted over US Air Force jet

The aircraft was created to detect radiation and it was flying in global airspace over the East China Sea.

China is deeply suspicious of any USA military activity in the resource-rich South China Sea.

In September 2015, during a state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States, the US and China concluded an agreement to govern air-to-air encounters of military aircraft.

She further reiterated that the radiation detection aircraft was carrying out a routine mission and was operating in accordance with global law.

"We hope that the USA side can respect China's reasonable security concerns".

The incident is the latest of encounters over territories China that insists are its own, claims the USA opposes.

Two Chinese fighter jets intercepted a US Air Force radiation detection plane above the East China Sea earlier this week, US media reported late Thursday. They said the incident was being run through the "appropriate diplomatic channels" to address the actions of the Chinese pilots.

'This flight was no exception'. US officials are describing the intercept as "unprofessional". The incident reportedly took place in global airspace.

Separately, China and South East Asian countries have agreed a framework for a long-awaited code of conduct for the disputed South China Sea, China's foreign ministry said, without giving details on the content.

Donald Trump's administration has been ratcheting up pressure on nuclear-armed North Korea to give up its military ambitions. It is pushing for dialogue between the two sides. The United States described that incident as an unsafe intercept as well.

More than that, it underlines the tensions over American military surveillance in the region.

In February, a US Navy spy plane and a Chinese military aircraft came within 1,000 feet of each other over the South China Sea.

One of the Chinese fighters executed an "inverted maneuver" above the American plane, essentially conducting a barrel roll above the plane, said the official. "The U.S. refuses to recognize the zone, and it is unclear whether the incident took place in it".
