Si Woo Kim becomes youngest ever Players Champion

Kim carded a final round of 69 at Sawgrass to finish 10 under par, three shots ahead of Poulter and former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen.

Kim also becomes the second Korean golfer to win here at The Players Championship.

Poulter, who tied Oosthuizen for second, trailed by two shots for nearly the entire back nine.

"I feel like I'm still dreaming", Kim said, through an interpreter, about becoming the youngest Players champion and the first player from Asia to win twice on the PGA Tour before age 22.

Just over four years ago, Kim came to the United States to play the final version of the tour's qualifying school.

Competing against Team United States at the Cup will be the worldwide team, comprising the top 10 global players in the official world ranking. That gave him a 70 and a tie for fourth with Kyle Stanley, a co-leader after 54 holes who shot 75. It was only the third albatross in the history of the tournament and the first on that hole.

The Players Championship victor Si Woo Kim withdrew from the AT&T Byron Nelson Classic Monday, citing a back injury. Kim also became the youngest player ever to win the title, breaking the record previously held by Australian Adam Scott, who won it when he was a 23-year-old in 2004.

"I really wish ( I could avoid it) but I have to go to the military service and I've already decided I'm going to go, too, so I'm ready".

Ian Poulter's tie for second place with Oosthuizen caps a memorable comeback for the Ryder Cup star. "But the fourth shot was pretty special - from one of the worst shots I've ever hit to one of the very best". "He's gone clean out there today, which is extremely impressive under that pressure. He's just so mentally strong for 21 that you can't really believe that he's 21". "Never once did he look flustered at all".

Defending champion Jason Day had a quadruple-bogey nine at the par-five 16th and a double-bogey at the par three 17th to shoot 80 and plunge to equal 60th. In 12 tournaments before The Players, his best finish was a tie for 22nd at the Texas Open and he shot only three rounds in the 60s, which he matched in four days on the Stadium Course.

Less than a month ago Poulter thought he had lost his card on the PGA Tour after failing to earn enough points in a certain number of events this season having recovered from a foot injury that badly affected his 2016 campaign.

Once Kim dropped his three birdies putts, he was unrelenting, especially when he made par saves on six of the back-nine holes.

J.B. Holmes brought the wrong kind of a show - an 84, the highest final round of anyone who had at least a share of the 54-hole lead.
