Gay rights supporters demonstrate in Russia's St. Petersburg

Only Greater Political Will Can Save Gay Chechens

According to the document, the European Parliament members "are deeply concerned at reports of arbitrary detention and torture of men perceived to be gay in Chechnya (Russian Federation) and condemn Chechen government statements denying the existence of homosexuals in their country and inciting violence against" LGBT people.

According to a BuzzFeed News report, a group of around 40 gay men are hiding elsewhere in Russian Federation to escape the country's homophobic persecution, and have had difficulty acquiring visas to leave the country. In April, another report came out that claimed that gay men in Chechnya were allegedly being killed or sent to makeshift prisons. Although the spokesperson could not provide names of countries from which they're now attempting to secure visas, they told Buzzfeed News, "We were informed that the U.S. is not going to issue visas for people from Chechnya".

On April 1, Russia's Novaya Gazeta daily raised the issue of gay people's civil rights being violated in Chechnya. The Russia LGBT Network told BuzzFeed that the USA had allegedly declined to issue visas to help these people find a safe harbor.

Meanwhile, Lithuania has become the first country to grant asylum to gay and bisexual Chechens needing to escape their home country. "As visa records are confidential under USA law, we are unable to discuss individual cases". Chechnya continues to deny the atrocities they are committing, arguing that there can not be any attacks on gay men in the nation because there are no gay men in the nation.

"For several weeks now, a brutal campaign against LGBT people has been sweeping through Chechnya". Some of the men have forcibly disappeared. "The number of sources and the consistency of the stories leaves us with no doubt that these devastating developments have indeed occurred". She went on to say that "the U.S. is not going to issue visas for people from Chechnya". In a statement, the USA ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said: "If true, this violation of human rights can not be ignored".
