Macron won 66.1 percent of the vote against 33.9 percent for far-right leader Marine Le Pen, final results from the Interior Ministry showed on Monday.

The European Union, for its part, has been witnessing severe divisions and a major identity crisis, which was mainly incited by the exit of Britain.

"This Socialist Party is dead, it is behind us", Valls said Tuesday. However, Le Pen called on all patriots "to join us" in constituting a "new political force" during the upcoming legislative elections. Certainly this is a step in the right direction for a united, inclusive Europe.

"Your victory is a happy day for all who believe in a united and strong Europe", Kiska wrote in a telegram of congratulations to Macron, wishing him success in carrying out all tasks related to the office.

"He carries the hopes of millions of French people, and of many people in Germany and the whole of Europe", the German chancellor told a press conference.

"Congratulations to @EmmanuelMacron, new president of #France".

The New York Times said that France, like other major democracies, faced the challenge of "many people feeling marginalised by globalisation, economic stagnation, an unresponsive government, unemployment, faceless terrorism and a tide of immigrants".

Macron proposes business-friendly reforms, and has said that he wants to see some power over bank capital rules transferred from regulators to European ministers.

"I will vote for Emmanuel Macron", Hollande said in a speech, broadcast by BFMTV television.

"I look forward to working closely with President-elect Macron in the years ahead as we work together on a progressive agenda to promote worldwide security, increase collaboration in science and technology, and create good, middle class jobs on both sides of the Atlantic", he said in a statement earlier.

Russian President Vladimir Putin asked Macron to bridge deep rifts between Moscow and Paris and work together to fight the threat of terror.
